Detox Your Liver Without Juices or Gimmicks
a synergistic blend of 12 powerful liver-protective supplements

We can protect ourselves to some extent by avoiding obvious hazards such as recreational drugs, unsafe sex, and raw shellfish, all of which can cause the liver-damaging disease hepatitis. But even when we’re being good to our liver, hidden dangers can damage its cells and interfere with toxin breakdown. Toxins lurk in prescription medications, food additives, and air pollutants, and these may be impossible to avoid completely.

Here’s where “liver detoxification” might come in. When the liver is working double-duty to protect you from an onslaught of bad diet, bad judgment, and unavoidable insults, it could benefit from a little extra help.

Preventing the progression on the liver causing liver inflammation and damage is an absolute priority. Whether the liver is infected with a virus, injured by chemicals and toxins, suffocated by excessive fat accumulation or under attack from the immune system, the threat of each condition is singular.

The synergy of 12 natural ingredients in 1 Bottle to help Support and Detox your Liver

    Improve Recovery & Overall Health

Feeling sluggish in the morning? Your liver cleanses toxins from the bloodstream, keeping you feeling healthy and energetic. It also helps with digestion, hormone production, and maintaining proper metabolism. As we age our liver function diminishes, leading to toxin buildup in the liver and bloodstream. Regain youthful liver function with the rejuvenating effects of BioPro Liver Support + Detox.

    Whole Body Health

The condition of our blood throughout our whole body is mostly reliant on the health of our liver. As a “blood purifier,” the liver needs to actively clean the blood each and every day in order to support nearly every system within our body.

    Reduce Inflammation

Most inflammation is caused by toxins within the body, and is a root cause of many diseases and conditions, including most forms of cancer. A healthy liver can more effectively filter out toxins, and reduce harmful inflammation.

    • Why Use LIVER SUPPORT + DETOX

We're often tempted to overindulge, which can do damage to the liver. With our liver working overtime to inactivate intoxicants such as alcohol or THC, and process rich foods, a potion to heal stressed-out liver cells might just do the trick.

Most toxins, or poisons, reach our bloodstream when we swallow or inhale them. Others pass through our skin, while still others are released by dying cells or invading bacteria. Many of these toxins pass through the liver -- the body's waste-purification plant -- where they are broken down and removed from the blood before they can do their dirty work.

The liver is our largest internal organ and is responsible for performing a number of essential detoxifying functions. The condition of our blood throughout our whole body is mostly reliant on the health of our liver. As a “blood purifier,” the liver needs to actively clean the blood each and every day in order to support nearly every system within our body.

The liver helps remove harmful substances from our blood, aids in hormone production, detoxifies the body, releases glucose into the bloodstream in order to give our body steady energy and releases bile into our small intestine so fat can be absorbed from foods. You can see why poor liver function can create so many problems!

We can protect ourselves to some extent by avoiding obvious hazards such as recreational drugs, unsafe sex, and raw shellfish, all of which can cause the liver-damaging disease hepatitis. But even when we're being good to our liver, hidden dangers can damage its cells and interfere with toxin breakdown. Toxins lurk in prescription medications, food additives, and air pollutants, and these may be impossible to avoid completely.

Here's where "liver detoxification" might come in.

The liver has many essential roles, including:

      • Helping fight infections
      • Cleaning the blood of toxins
      • Aiding food digestion
      • Storing energy for when it is needed
      • Manufacturing necessary enzymes

While a healthy liver can grow new cells after it has been damaged, those with a weak liver may be unable to regenerate new cells. If a person with a weak liver suffers from repeated liver cell injury, his or her liver’s ability to perform its functions (and thus support life) can deteriorate quickly. In addition, obstructions in the liver’s bile duct can cause a backup of bile and waste products in the liver – contributing to congestion and liver damage. Thus, anything that helps ward off liver damage or that upholds the liver’s ability to function optimally can help those with liver disease maintain their health.

      5-Methyltetrahydrofolate 5 MTHF

      Calcium (75% Folate)

LIVER SUPPORT + DETOX contains the activated form of folic acid (L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate) to help methylation, and the methylcobalamin form of vitamin B 12, which is more conducive to good methylation than cyanocobalamin.

Methylation is a biochemical process in the body that it is vital to good health and staying younger for longer. Basically, methylation is a process that helps your body to work more efficiently – it is your body’s helper!

Its possible that most people do not have enough methyl groups and this can be true even if a person eats a very healthy diet. This can be due to some types of pollution that interfere with the body’s production of methyl groups and certain toxins or stress that everyone is exposed to today which increases the body’s need for methyl groups.

Methylation reactions are very common in the body and involved in most body functions, to some degree. This is why compromised methylation can cause or contribute to almost all health conditions. Most people today have inadequate methylation, so this becomes a very important subject.

Methylation is a chemical process that occurs in a cycle in your body’s cells that is vital to enable your cells to make other substances work correctly. Methylation is one of the body’s most important and most common chemical processes.

Methylation is a primary method of removing toxins in the phase 2 liver detoxification process. Methylation converts toxins of all kinds from insoluble or fat-soluble compounds into water soluble compounds. Once these toxins are made water soluble they can then be easily eliminated from the body via watery fluids such as the urine, sweat and bile. If this does not occur, these toxins cannot be eliminated and they will build up in the body.

Methylation tags toxic substances so they can be changed in a way that allows the body to identify them as toxins and then eliminate them rapidly and more easily. Larger toxic molecules are then able to be eliminated through the bile, while smaller ones pass into the blood stream and are removed by the kidneys in the urine and in the sweat.

      Vitamin B 12

B 12 is important to every cell and system, including the blood and nervous system. Low levels of vitamin B12 (as well as folate) are associated with high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that, at elevated levels, is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke and may also play a role in age-related mental decline and dementia. B12 is found naturally only in foods of animal origin; many other foods are fortified with it. The body can store large amounts.

Claims, purported benefits: B12 prevents confusion and memory loss in older people, protects the heart, peps you up, especially when given as injections. Treats canker sores.

Bottom line: Many people over age 50 don’t produce enough stomach acid to adequately absorb B12. A poor diet and heavy drinking can also contribute to a deficiency. Vegans (who eat no animal products) and people with intestinal diseases can also be at risk. Severe B12 deficiency can cause confusion, memory loss, tingling and weakness in the limbs, hallucinations, and listlessness. A much rarer but more serious type of B12 deficiency that can occur at any age is pernicious anemia, in which the stomach nearly stops producing acid and a protein also needed for absorption (intrinsic factor), so that virtually no B12 from food is absorbed. Initially this causes anemia, but eventually, when B12 stores are depleted, there can be irreversible damage to the nervous system. Blood tests can diagnose a B12 deficiency; high doses of B12 can correct it. Older people need 6 to 15 micrograms of B12 daily (the RDA is just 2.4 micrograms), easily obtained from food or a multivitamin. Most multis marketed for seniors have 25 or 30 micrograms. Unless you have been diagnosed as deficient you don’t need additional supplementation.

      Selenium

Selenium is a trace element found in the soil. Required in small amounts to maintain good health, selenium is essential for many body processes and is especially abundant in the kidneys, liver, spleen, testes and pancreas. Of particular interest to those with liver problems, selenium boasts several functions that make it a valuable component to any liver wellness program.

Several studies corroborate the belief that selenium is valuable to liver health. Trace amounts of selenium are necessary to form two enzymes – glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase – both of which indirectly reduce certain oxidized molecules. Since oxidation is a known manner in which liver damage occurs, antioxidants like selenium help preserve liver tissue.

A variety of sources indicate that selenium strengthens immunity by aiding in the production of disease-fighting antibodies.

Selenium us believed to mobilize cancer-fighting cells, selenium may be helpful in preventing cancer. Since those with advanced liver disease are at risk of developing liver cancer, any efforts that could stop cells from going awry is generally welcomed.

This trace element is needed for tissue elasticity, an important characteristic for those with chronic liver disease. Because rigidity in liver tissue and local blood vessels are consequences of several types of liver disease, efforts to preserve elasticity also helps support healthful hepatic circulation.

      Milk Thistle Extract

Milk thistle, a natural herb that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is commonly used to detoxify the body, especially the liver. Milk thistle (which has the scientific name Silybum marianum) is a weed that grows mostly in California (although it can be grown in many parts of the world with a warm climate) that’s commonly turned into extract or supplement form to reap its cell regenerating milk thistle benefits.

As an herb that’s considered a “hepatic, galactogogue, demulcent and cholagogue,” milk thistle is able to promote healthy digestive function by helping with enzyme formation, increasing bile production, decreasing inflammation and soothing the mucous membranes throughout the body.

Milk thistle has actually been used for over 2,000 years. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region and a member of the Asteraceae plant family, which also includes other plants like sunflowers and daisies. The Greek physician and botanist Dioscorides was the first to describe milk thistle’s healing properties back in the year 40 A.D.

Milk thistle benefits work by drawing toxins out of the body that can cause a range of symptoms and diseases — including cancer development, high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney stones, gall bladder disorders, negative effects of chemotherapy, alcohol use, skin damage and much more.

As an antioxidant, milk thistle is equally powerful to other important nutrients like vitamin E or vitamin C, which help fight free radical damage and slow the aging process that can lead to disease development. It specifically contains high levels of lipophilic extracts from the seeds of the plant, which act as bioflavanoid antioxidants that increase immunity and slow down oxidative stress.

While it has many different benefits, milk thistle is most well-known for being a natural liver supporter and detoxifier. The liver constantly works hard to help defend us from toxins that are common in our everyday life, acting like a filter and removing harmful substances from the body.

Milk thistle is shown to decrease, or even reverse, damage to the liver that’s been caused by alcohol, THC, prescription medications, antibiotics, pollution, heavy metals and so on.

As a liver support and liver aid, milk thistle is a powerful detoxifier. It helps rebuild liver cells while removing toxins from the body that are processed through the liver. Milk thistle is effective at naturally reversing the harmful effects of alcohol consumption, pesticides in our food supply, heavy metals in our water supply, pollution in the air that we breathe in and even poisons!

Milk thistle has been approved as a therapeutic treatment for various liver diseases, including fatty liver syndrome, damage from alcoholism, jaundice, psoriasis, hepatitis and others.

      Artichoke

Since antiquity artichoke has been employed as a bile stimulant and diuretic. As a traditional medicine, artichoke has been used primarily for enhancing liver function. Among traditional healers, artichoke has been used to treat chronic liver and gall bladder diseases, jaundice, hepatitis, arteriosclerosis and symptoms of diabetes.

The ancient Greeks and Romans regarded artichoke as a valuable digestive aid and the relatively rare plant was reserved for consumption primarily by the elite. In the Middle Ages in Europe, the artichoke was consumed primarily by the royal and the rich.

In traditional European medicine, the leaves of the artichoke were used as a diuretic and as a "choleretic" to stimulate the flow of bile from the liver and gall bladder.

In the early 1900’s, French scientists began to investigate the traditional medicinal uses of the artichoke plant. Somewhat later, Italian scientists isolated a compound from artichoke leaf called cynarin. From the 1950s to the 1980s, cynarin was used as a drug to stimulate the liver and gall bladder and to treat elevated cholesterol. Since that time, cynarin has been supplanted by other drugs.

Artichoke leaf increases bile production, protects the liver, reduces cholesterol, promotes urination, and stimulates appetite. These activities are attributed to the compounds cynarin and chlorogenic acid. According to Jim Duke’s phytochemical database, cynarin lowers cholesterol, protects the liver, helps to regenerate the liver, and enhances overall liver function. It is also diuretic, and relieves indigestion. The antioxidant chlorogenic acid, which also lowers cholesterol, is anti-inflammatory, stimulates bile production, protects the liver and enhances overall immunity. Artichoke’s promotion of bile appears to be its most significant attribute. Bile is a fluid manufactured in the liver and stored in the gall bladder, and plays a significant role in digestion.

      Curcumin

A distinctly yellow member of the ginger family, turmeric (containing Curcumin) is a key ingredient for many Indian, Persian, Thai and Malay dishes – in curry, masak lemak, rendang and more. Containing up to five percent essential oils and three percent curcumin, many culinary traditions use turmeric specifically for its well-known medicinal value. As of February 2010, the U.S. National Institutes of Health had 19 registered clinical trials underway to study the use of dietary turmeric and curcumin.

Outside of the U.S., scientific progress has recently demonstrated curcumin’s value to those with liver disease. Published in the April 2010 edition of the Journal Gut, researchers from Austria found that feeding curcumin to mice reduced the types of inflammation that can cause liver cell damage, blockage and scarring. In their effort to evaluate curcumin’s efficacy at delaying liver disease progression, the research team led by Michael Trauner of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology division at the Medical University Graz in Austria, analyzed tissue and blood samples from mice with chronic liver inflammation before and after adding curcumin to their diet for four or eight weeks. They found that mice on a curcumin-containing diet:

      • Had significantly reduced bile duct blockage
      • Had less liver cell damage and scarring

      L-Glutathione Reduced

Glutathione is an amino acid sometimes called the “master antioxidant” of the human body. It accounts for a huge percentage of your total antioxidant capacity. And it’s not something that you can get from food. Most foods have some glutathione, but the glutathione you eat is broken down by digestion before it ever gets where you want it. Studies have found that dietary glutathione isn’t actually associated with glutathione levels in the blood, and supplementing with glutathione is an extremely inefficient (and expensive) way to raise glutathione levels by a very small amount.

Instead of eating it in food, your body produces glutathione itself. And if your capacity to do that is impaired, it’s a big deal. Glutathione is crucial for detoxification in the liver; unlike some other detoxification schemes that will remain nameless, it actually has documented evidence of a benefit. It’s also necessary for healthy immune function and general antioxidant defenses against free radicals. Low levels of glutathione are associated with health problems from overtraining to HIV/AIDS.

Glutathione does all kinds of things! Two of the most important are assisting with detoxification in the liver and its anti-inflammatory/immune function.

Glutathione is critical for detoxification in the liver (you know, the thing that actually helps you detoxify, unlike weird footpads and lemon juice cleanses). In the liver, glutathione binds to toxins before they’re excreted, which is an important step in getting them out of your body. In fact, the detox power of glutathione is so powerful that it’s used for people who overdose on Tylenol (acetaminophen) and have to go to the hospital to detox. In that case, the person gets an IV with another amino acid that helps their body make glutathione, called N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). The NAC increases their body’s production of glutathione, which helps their liver get rid of the acetaminophen.

Of course, glutathione is most famous for its general antioxidant effects. This study defined glutathione as “a first line of defense” against oxidative stress. Other enzymes that rely on glutathione also provide a backup. If you’re not really sure what that means or why it’s good, the explanation you’re looking for is right here: to give the very short version, antioxidants help protect your cells

In an effort to prevent liver damage, it’s essential to protect against free radicals. Thus, free radical neutralizers, otherwise known as antioxidants, are always advised to support liver health. A naturally occurring antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals, Alpha Lipoic Acid is included in many practitioners’ recommended liver health regimens because it is known to protect – and even restore the integrity of liver cells.

      Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant that is used to protect the liver for a variety of reasons.

Unlike other antioxidants, Alpha R-Lipoic Acid is both fat and water-soluble. Thus, this antioxidant can bind with free radicals in a lean liver or in a fatty liver, and it can confer free radical protection to both interior and exterior cellular structures.

Antioxidants are typically depleted as they attack free radicals, but there is evidence that Alpha R-Lipoic Acid may help to regenerate other antioxidants so they can function once again. Such a capability is highly desired when constant liver inflammation threatens to form new free radicals.

A primary function of Alpha R-Lipoic Acid is to increase and boost the body’s production of glutathione, which helps dissolve toxic substances in the liver.

Studies show that Alpha R-Lipoic Acid restores liver enzyme levels back to normal. Alpha Lipoic Acid is well-known in the health supplement industry to help those with chronic liver ailments. However, information regarding the different forms of Alpha R-Lipoic Acid – and which one is preferred – is just now being acknowledged.

Until a universal cure is discovered, liver problems demand vigilant attention to preserving as many liver cells as possible. Due to its ability to protect the liver from free radical damage, Alpha R-Lipoic Acid is a logical choice for liver cell preservation. Because it scavenges free radicals, has a dynamic solubility, can regenerate other antioxidants, boosts glutathione and helps normalize liver enzyme levels, ALA should be a top contender in everyone’s liver wellness regimen.

      Picrorhiza Root Extract

Among the tissues that make up the immune system, the liver is paramount. The immune response to both foreign and endogenous substances is largely determined by the liver, making it a key regulator of inflammation in the body. Through its many biochemical functions, the liver plays a critical role in protecting the body from the damaging effects of all kinds of toxins, including the toxic bi-products of daily biochemical activity and toxins from the environment that are encountered in ordinary and extraordinary circumstances, and requires powerful antioxidants to do this work.

A number of medicinal herbs have been identified as strong potentiators of detoxification. Often rich in antioxidants and constituents that stimulate immune activity, these herbs can stimulate and support the liver’s detoxifying capacity. A few outstanding examples of these important medicinal herbs are presented below.

The rhizome of this Himalayan plant has been an important medicinal in the Ayurvedic system for centuries, used primarily to treat gastrointestinal ailments such as indigestion, constipation, and chronic diarrhea. Picrorhiza has gained attention more recently for its hepatoprotective and anti-toxic effects.

The antioxidant activities of picrorhiza’s constituents were found in one study to stimulate superoxide dismutase, promote metal ion chelation, and inhibit xanthine oxidase. In addition, picrorhiza appears to regenerate reduced glutathione.

Traditionally, Picrorhiza kurrooa, also known as Kutki, is a well-known herb in both Indian Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used to treat disorders of the liver and upper respiratory tract (including bronchial asthma), reduce fevers, and to treat dyspepsia, chronic diarrhea, and scorpion stings and snake bites. But primarily, it is known as a liver herb that not only protects and heals the liver, but also prevents liver toxicity, neutralizes harmful biochemical changes in the liver caused by many toxic agents, and even improves the flow of bile. Let's look at some of these benefits in a little more detail.

      Liver Protection

Numerous animal studies have demonstrated that the active biochemicals of Picrorhiza root are an effective means for liver detox-- they, in fact, showed significant curative activity--vis-à-vis numerous toxic agents such as galactosamine, thiocetamide, and carbon tetrachloride. When administered, the toxic agents produced a 40-62% inhibition of cell viability. On removal of the toxic agents and the addition of the Picrorhiza extract, a concentration dependent reversal of these negative effects was seen in as little as 48 hours. A similar effect was seen when oral Picrorhiza extract was administered to rats poisoned by aflatoxin B1 exposure. Picrorhiza kurrooa "significantly prevented the biochemical changes induced by aflatoxin B1."

Now, while it is true that most of us are not too worried by things like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or ingesting carbon tetrachloride, we still subject our livers to constant stressors that ultimately damage and destroy liver cells—and, remember, that damage is cumulative over time. We’re talking about things like: Toxins, heavy metals, and pesticides. Everything we breathe, eat, and absorb through our skin is purified and refined in the liver. Lack of exercise forces the liver to do the elimination work that should be done by the lungs and the skin.

Thus, any herbs that are hepaprotective and that promote liver regeneration are an essential component of any health regimen. Similar to milk thistle, Picrorhiza has been shown to stimulate liver regeneration in rats. Specifically, studies have shown that oral administration of picroliv, a standardized fraction of roots and rhizomes of Picrorhiza kurrooa, showed stimulation of nucleic acid and protein synthesis in rat livers. Results are comparable to those seen when silymarin is administered. Even better. Picrorhiza extract was also shown to be effective in reversing alcohol-induced liver damage in rats. Treatment restored the damage in a dose-dependent manner (36-100%) over 45 days. This is significant for anyone suffering from cirrhosis.

The bottom line is Picrorhiza kurrooa extract has incredible liver protective and regenerative capabilities. In this case, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And again, most of us are not dealing with the extreme circumstances covered in the studies, but what those studies tell us is that Picrorhiza is a mandatory ingredient for protecting our livers against the cumulative assaults of daily life.

      Dandelion Root Extract

Detoxifying the liver is one of the most important benefits of dandelion root. The function is also proved by many studies.

In the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, dandelion is said to support liver detoxification as well as promote increased bile production. As you might know, bile production is one of the main functions of the liver, which aims to filter and detoxify the blood.

In these days, we cannot deny the fact that modern living brings us a variety of conveniences varying from foods, drinks to supplements, medicines, and other health and beauty care products.

However, with convenience comes a certain level of toxins that can cause many health problems. As a result, our liver is affected as it works very hard to filter out toxins to keep the body toxin-free. When toxins become overwhelming, our liver suffers.

Fortunately, dandelion root helps enhance liver function by restoring hydration along with electrolyte balance. More importantly, it is effective in stimulating the process of toxin elimination.

HOW DANDELION ROOT WORKS TO DETOXIFY

Dandelion root has a bitter compound named taraxacerin that increases the level of bile flow released by the gallbladder. Thanks to this helpful property, dandelion root helps the liver detoxifies more efficiently.

A study carried out on mice showed that dandelion root extract could contribute to healing toxins-related liver damage. Furthermore, the extract also helps to eliminate toxins from the blood.

Dandelion is well applied in cases of jaundice and hepatitis, even cirrhosis of the liver. Nevertheless, this plant should not be used for those who have obstructive jaundice.

      N-Acetyl Cysteine NAC

Supplementing with N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) provides the body, the liver and all cells with increased glutathione and the antioxidant protection they need to better perform their functions. NAC is an amino acid that, when taken orally, is well absorbed and utilized by the body.

Glutathione, when taken orally, is not well absorbed by the body and only trace amounts ever reach the bloodstream and the cells that need it most. Taking glutathione intravenously would be best, but this is impractical. The practical solution is to take a precursor to glutathione - a component the body needs to make glutathione on its own. N-Acetyl L-Cysteine is the most frequently taken precursor to glutathione. Once orally taken, NAC is absorbed into the bloodstream and is naturally converted to glutathione.

NAC supports the body in five primary ways.

As a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger, N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) provides potent nutritional support to every cell in the body.

Many research scientists now believe that free radicals are causal factors in nearly every known disease, from heart disease to arthritis, from cataracts to cancer and are a major culprit in the aging process itself. NAC is a safe and frequently used supplement to increase glutathione production in the body.

Glutathione is the body's principal antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and detoxifies harmful substances. Since glutathione is an antioxidant that exists in every cell of the body, it is in a prime position to neutralize free radicals. While glutathione is naturally manufactured by your body, many people have decreased levels of glutathione, which can negatively affect one’s health. By incorporating N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) into your daily healthcare regimen, you are providing your system with a safe and frequently used method to increase glutathione levels within your body.

Some glutathione is obtained directly from our diet, approximately 150 milligrams per day, primarily from fruits and vegetables. The majority of glutathione needed, however, is manufactured within the cells of the body. Much of this process occurs in the liver with approximately 80% of the glutathione produced in the liver being exported to the plasma and largely used by the kidneys for detoxification.

As we age glutathione production decreases naturally. This decrease leaves our body more susceptible to the dangers of free radicals, the aging process, decreased immune response and multiple diseases. Additionally, people with liver concerns are even more susceptible to these issues since their liver is not performing optimally and will therefore produce even less glutathione. This decreased glutathione level makes the liver more susceptible to further toxicity.

Glutathione enables lymphocytes to function properly. Lymphocytes are small white blood cells that are responsible for immune system responses to fight infection and foreign antibodies. By increasing glutathione production you can assist your body in improving and maintaining a healthy immune system.

Glutathione helps us reach peak mental and physical function. Raised glutathione levels decrease muscle damage, reduce recovery time, increase strength and endurance and shift metabolism from fat production to muscle development.

Low levels of glutathione lead to inflammation and oxidative stress which results in damage to cell membranes, cellular proteins and DNA. These issues have been linked to many chronic and age related diseases. NAC neutralizes environmental toxins and pollutants including heavy metals that accumulate in the liver and kidneys.

NAC achieves these actions, in part, by facilitating the removal of these toxins and pollutants from tissues, promoting healthy glutathione levels, and protecting tissues from

NAC has been shown to accelerate muscle growth. This is one reason why it's popular with bodybuilders, rugby players, professional athletes and sprinters seeking to gain lean muscle size and weight.

NAC is an important daily supplement for all who wish to optimize their overall health.

      Bioperine:

Piperine also known by its trademarked name, Bioperine, is an extract derived from black pepper, Piper Nigrum L, and long pepper, Piper longum L. Piperine is what gives peppers their spicy taste. This extract is marketed as a nutritional supplement and has been found to increase the absorption of a variety of nutrients. Though some of the benefits of piperine have yet to be firmly established, it may also have immune-suppressing, tumor-inhibiting and antidepressant effects. While piperine is probably safe to use, some concerns have been raised regarding its potentially dangerous, enhancing effect on certain drugs. As with starting any new treatments, consult your doctor first.

      Absorption of Nutrients

The most established effect of piperine is its effect on absorption of nutrients from the intestine. This effect is known as "bioenhancement." According to an article published in the "Journal of Ayruveda and Integrative Medicine" in 2010, piperine has been shown to increase the absorption of vitamin C, selenium, beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin B-6 and coenzyme Q. The article goes on to suggest that piperine may be useful for people who suffer from conditions that cause malabsorption of nutrients and people suffering from malnutrition.

      Immunomodulator

While the primary immune system functions to eradicate foreign invaders, it can sometimes malfunction. A variety of diseases are caused by a faulty immune reaction. Piperine has been shown to decrease the activity of this inflammatory response. The findings from a study published in the "European Journal of Pharmacology" in 2010 suggest that piperine may decrease the communication of lymphocytes in the immune system, thereby slowing down their action. Piperine has been shown to be beneficial in gout, a disease characterized by a strong immune response against uric acid crystals. A study published in "Inflammation" in 2011 provided evidence that piperine blocked uric acid crystals from forming and that it could be used as a treatment for gout.

      Anti-tumor Effect

Some evidence suggests that piperine may have some anti-cancer properties. A publication in "Clinical Laboratory Science" in 2008, for example, suggests that piperine inhibits the growth of colon cancers cells grown in a lab. The exact mechanisms by which the supplement prevents cancer are unknown, however, and whether this anti-cancer effect is effective outside of the laboratory remains to be proven.

      Antidepressant

Piperine may have some antidepressant activity as well, though this has not yet been firmly established. A trial of piperine on rats found that the animals provided evidence that the supplement had antidepressant and cognitive-enhancing effects. These findings were published in "Food and Chemical Toxicology" in 2008. Another study published in "Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior" in 2009 found that piperine increased the neurotransmission of serotonin and dopamine, two chemicals that are often deficient in depressed individuals. Clinical trials testing the supplement are needed to verify whether these benefits transfer to people.
